I have been in business as a self employed consultant for over 20 years. Initially, my tax, accountancy and personal finance affairs were looked after by a local firm of accountants, and I had reasonably good service. This firm was then taken over by a large national accountancy organisation. The quality of work and the service I received then became increasingly poor as the fees charged went up.
In my view this was due to the fact that my business is a relatively small one. As a consequence in a large organisation my affairs were handled by the more junior staff. I found that the person dealing with my account regularly changed, removing the continuity that is so important with financial matters. The work undertaken often gave rise to mistakes and queries, and it was frequently delivered late.
